New Delhi, March 17 -- Munni and Sheila are now on sale. You can buy Sheila - a black and white mixed fabric sari- in Sarojini Nagar for R450, and Munni - a green and red floral print crepe sari- from Lajpat Nagar for R1,100.
Cashing in on the popularity of Bollywood, shopkeepers in Delhi have named certain saris after superhit item songs.
"We named our bestselling sari Sheila and the second best, Munni. Ever since, the demand has gone up by three times," says Karan Lakhwani of Meera Sarees in Sarojini Nagar.
The shop also has a range of saris dedicated to film stars such as Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor. In some shops, the saris also bear similarity to what the actors wear on screen. "We have a Sheila sari for R1,500, which is watermelon red. We launched it a month ago and have already sold nine," says Shyam Sunder of Prem Saree Collection in Chandni Chowk. He adds that they also have a red and white sari called Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit's character in the 2002 film, Devdas). "People always want to follow the latest trend in Bollywood, and naming the saris is an effective technique," says a staffer at Rang Tarang Fabric House in Lajpat Nagar.
