The year 2009 saw a lot of new talent burst onto the Hindi film industry. However, unlike some of the recent years, there were not too many debutants who left a strong impression in the minds of the audience. We at Bollywood Hungama take a look at some of the graduates of the 'Class of 2009' and also give a brief report card of their performance.
Mahie Gill
First Test: This Punjabi kudi displayed a lot of spunk as the feisty 'Paro' in Anurag Kashyap's much talked about Dev D.
Performance: As the new age Paro who has no inhibitions in making love to her lover in the grass fields, Mahie struck the right notes. Even in her second film Gulaal (also directed by Anurag Kashyap), Mahie's item number 'Ranaji' drew in a lot of ceetis and taalis. However, films like Aagey Se Right and Pal Pal Dil Ke Saath will be black spots in her report card this year.
Future Plan Of Action: Mahie will be next seen alongside Irrfan Khan in Paan Singh Tomar
Final Grade: B+
Kalki Koechlin
First Test: When the promos of Dev D first hit TV screens, everybody was shocked to see a firang girl play the role of Chandramukhi. Only when the film neared release, did people know that the girl was Kalki Koechlin who is half French and half Tamilian.
Performance: Kalki's portrayal of the modern day Chandramukhi aka 'Chanda' was something which took a lot of people by surprise. Playing a call girl, Kalki got the right emotions and what's more unlike the original Devdas even got the hero in the end of the film.
Future Plan Of Action: Post Dev D, Kalki has been more in the news for her relationship with Anurag Kashyap. Little wonder then that she will be next seen in Anurag Kashyap's thriller That Girl In Yellow Boots.
Final Grade: B+
Aamna Shariff
First Test: She was once the Queen of the small screen and made her debut in Bollywood with the not so tasty Aloo Chaat.
Performance: Despite the film being panned by critics, Aamna didn't perform too badly in her role of a simple Muslim girl in love with a Hindu boy. If Aloo Chaat was a disaster at the B.O., Aamna's next release Aao Wish Karein was even worse. The film where she was once again paired opposite Aftab Shivdasani came and sank without a trace leaving Aamna wishing that she hadn't done the film.
Final Grade: B-
Jackky Bhagnani
First Test: His was probably the biggest launch of the year. Son of veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky made his debut with the romantic thriller Kal Kissne Dekha directed by Vivek Sharma.
Performance: Kal Kissne Dekha was among the first films to open after the multiplex strike ended, yet the film hardly found any takers. Despite Jackky doing everything that a debutant does (action, dance, romance, comedy) his performance and the film in particular was not highly spoken of.
Future Plan Of Action: Jaccky will once again try his luck at the B.O. with yet another film Faltu which also stars Sanjay Dutt in a pivotal role.
Final Grade: B-
Shruti Haasan
First Test: When Shruti Haasan decided to make her debut with a Hindi film, a lot of eyebrows were raised. However Shruti was convinced and went ahead and made her debut with the multi-starrer Luck.
Performance: Prior to release, Shruti's rocking music video 'Aazma Luck' was very well received and expectations were naturally high from this talented young girl. However, when the film released, people were a bit disappointed with not just the film but also Shruti's performance. Her diction especially came in for a lot of flak and the much talked bikini sequence was nothing to write home about.
Future Plan Of Action: Shruti will next be seen in a Telugu flick titled Yodha
Final Grade: B
Giselle Monteiro
First Test: This Brazilian model took everyone by surprise when she effortless played the role of the Punjabi kudi 'Harleen Kaur' in the super-hit Love Aaj Kal.
Performance: The makers of Love Aaj Kal did a smart thing by not revealing Giselle's identity till the film released. In fact when people came out of the film, they were curious to find out who was the actress who played the role of Harleen Kaur. But obviously they were in for a shock of their lives on discovering that the Punjabi kudi was actually a Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro. Needless to say, Giselle's performance was widely appreciated by one and all.
Final Grade: A
Chandan Roy Sanyal
First Test: The talented actor impressed one and all through his portrayal of the wacky doped out 'Mikhail' in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey.
Performance: Audiences first got a glimpse of Chandan Roy Sanyal when he was seen prancing around along with Shahid Kapoor in the promos of the 'Dhan Te Nan' song. When the film opened, Chandan's brilliant portrayal of the coke snorting Bengali gangster took everyone by surprise. Despite the fact that his character was bumped off soon after the interval, Chandan Roy impressed one and all with his 'Fatafati' performance.
Future Plan Of Action: The buzz is that Chandan will be next seen in Shahid's mother Neelima Azim's directorial venture.
Final Grade: A+
Jacqueline Fernandez
First Test: Jacqueline played Aladin's love interest 'Jasmine' in the fantasy flick Aladin
Performance: There is no doubt that Jacqueline has a very pretty face, however the actress of Sri Lankan origin didn't exactly get to show her mettle much in her debut flick. One will have to wait and watch out for her performances in some of her future films.
Future Plan Of Action: Jacqueline will once again be seen opposite Riteish Deshmukh in Milap Zaveri's directorial debut Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai.
Final Grade: B
Shazahn Padamsee
First Test: Daughter of veteran theatre personalities Alyque Padamsee and Sharon Prabhakar, Shazahn made her big screen debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Shimit Amin's Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year.
Performance: While Shazahn did display a fair amount of spunk as the girl next door, the length of her role didn't provide her too much of an opportunity to display her acting talents.
Final Grade: B
Omi Vaidya
First Test: He was completely unheard of before the release of his debut film 3 Idiots, but once the first show had ended, people were curious to find out the name of the actor who played the role of the know-it-all Chatur 'Silencer' Ramalingam.
Performance: Omi, a theatre actor from the US of A, maybe new to Bollywood but one look at his effortless portrayal of the typical IIT nerd and you know that this is an actor who will go a long way in the days to come.
Final Grade: A+
Besides the above mentioned names, there were many others (Vaishali Desai, Nausheen Ali Sardar, Sheena Shahabadi, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Namit Das, Shikha Talsania and Arjun Mathur etc) who also ended up graduating from Bollywood's Class of 2009.
